How Do I Get
the $2,000 Washington Gas Rebate
for a New HVAC System?

Heating and cooling account for a significant portion of the energy used in a typical home. If your system is aging, inefficient, or requiring frequent repairs, upgrading to ENERGY STAR® certified heating equipment may help improve comfort, reduce energy use, and lower your heating costs.

Even better, eligible Virginia homeowners may qualify for rebates through the Washington Gas Home Energy Savings Program. Depending on the qualifying equipment installed, eligible homeowners may receive rebates of up to $2,000.

At B.L. James & Son, we help homeowners evaluate their existing heating systems, choose qualifying high-efficiency equipment, and understand available rebate opportunities before moving forward with an upgrade.

How Much Could You Save on a New Heating System?

Washington Gas offers rebates for several types of qualifying high-efficiency home heating equipment.

Current rebate opportunities include:

 • Furnace Tier 1: $500 rebate for equipment rated 95.1%–96.9% AFUE
 • Furnace Tier 2: $700 rebate for equipment rated 97%+ AFUE
 • Boiler: $750 rebate for equipment rated 95%+ AFUE
 • Combination Home and Water Heating Unit: $800 rebate for qualifying equipment rated 90% AFUE and/or UEF 0.87
 • Furnace or Boiler Tune-Up: $100 rebate for qualifying service completed by a network contractor
 • Dual Fuel Heat Pump With Furnace Replacement: Up to $2,000 for qualifying systems
 • Dual Fuel Heat Pump With Existing Furnace: Up to $1,400 for qualifying systems

Eligibility requirements apply. For dual fuel heat pump rebates, homeowners must replace an existing central air conditioning system with a qualifying dual fuel heat pump system. Replacing an existing heat pump does not qualify under this offer.

Why Consider Replacing an Older Furnace or Boiler?

If your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old, it may no longer provide the efficiency or consistent performance you expect.

Older heating equipment may lead to uneven temperatures, higher energy consumption, more frequent repairs, and an increased risk of an unexpected breakdown. Instead of waiting until the system fails during cold weather, replacing aging equipment gives you an opportunity to select a more efficient system while qualifying rebates are available.

A professional HVAC contractor can evaluate your current equipment and help determine whether repair, maintenance, or replacement makes the most sense for your home.

What Are the Benefits of ENERGY STAR Certified Heating Equipment?

ENERGY STAR certified heating systems are designed to meet higher energy-efficiency standards than conventional equipment.

According to ENERGY STAR, certified boilers use approximately 5% less energy than standard models, while certified furnaces are approximately 15% more energy efficient.

For homeowners, those efficiency improvements may mean lower energy consumption throughout the heating season. New equipment may also provide more consistent temperatures and dependable operation, especially when replacing a system that has been operating for 15 years or longer.

Proper installation matters, too. Even highly efficient equipment may not perform as expected when it is incorrectly sized or installed. Working with an experienced HVAC contractor helps ensure the system is properly selected and installed for your home's heating requirements.

How Do You Apply for a Washington Gas Heating Rebate?

Washington Gas outlines three basic steps for participating homeowners:

 1. Choose a participating contractor from the Washington Gas Home Energy Savings Contractor Network.
 2. Have the contractor install qualifying high-efficiency equipment that meets the program's current efficiency requirements.
 3. Your participating contractor submits the rebate application on your behalf.

Once approved, the rebate will either appear on your contractor invoice or be sent by check. Washington Gas states that mailed rebate checks generally arrive within approximately six to eight weeks.

Working with a participating contractor is especially important because installing equipment that does not meet the program requirements may make the project ineligible for the rebate.

Does a Furnace or Boiler Tune-Up Qualify for a Rebate?

Eligible Washington Gas customers may also receive a $100 rebate for a qualifying furnace or boiler tune-up completed by a network contractor.

Customers are eligible for one tune-up per piece of equipment during the 2025–2028 Virginia CARE program cycle. The total tune-up service must cost at least $100 to qualify. Services costing less than $100 are not eligible for the rebate.

This provides another option for homeowners whose heating equipment does not currently need replacement but would benefit from professional maintenance.
